How does it work?
If you work in the building trade as a subcontractor and are paid through the CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) then you are likely having 20% of your income deducted before you get your money.
Everybody pays tax but everybody also gets a ‘Personal Allowance’ – this is how much you can earn before you pay any Income Tax.
You only need to pay Income Tax on anything you earn ABOVE your Personal Allowance. BUT – if you get paid through the CIS scheme, you get 20% taken off ALL of your earnings.
Yes, you guessed it. That’s too much! You don’t need to pay tax on all of your income!
Therefore, you can claim back the difference between what tax you should have paid and what tax has been taken off.
That, in a nutshell, is a Tax Rebate.
To work out how much you can get we have to do your ‘books’.
We need details of all of your income – usually you get CIS Statements from the people who pay you. If they don’t give them to you, you can ask for them. If you lose any, you can ask for copies.
We also need details of all of your business expenses. If you’re not sure, give us the information and we will work it out for you.
Business expenses are things like tools, materials, protective clothing, phone and vehicle expenses relating to work use.
If in doubt, call us and we can advise you.
When we have all your info, we’ll work out how much you can get back, submit your tax return and claim your money!
We can usually take our fee from your rebate so you don’t have to find the money to pay us.
Our fees depend on how busy you have been and how much paperwork you have!
Our fee starts at £350 for basic self employed (including Tax Return submission to HMRC) for a basic sole trader and can go up to £500+ for larger businesses.
